Enhancing scholarly teaching at the University of Sydney

The ITL project entitled 'Enhancement of reflective scholarly teaching in communities of inquiry' is part of a national Promoting Excellence Initiative (PEI) funded by the Australian Learning and Teaching Council (ALTC) for the period July 2008-July 2010.

The PEI project aims to enhance the quality of teacher thinking across the University’s teaching community and within key communities of practice. It also aims to provide support to applicants of internal and external teaching grants and awards, and to facilitate engagement with ALTC resources.

The project has involved creating Teaching@Sydney, an e-bulletin designed to help keep the University community informed about teaching and learning news and events, as well as featuring ALTC fellows and leading staff as part of the ITL's seminar series on teaching and learning in higher education.

The project has also involved working particularly closely with the relevant communities at the University of Sydney on the following:

  1. Advancing and rewarding scholarly teaching across the University by enhancing the support provided to intending teaching-award applicants. More information
  2. Fostering expertise in developing and documenting scholarly teaching for academics undertaking the ITL's Graduate Certificate in Educational Studies (Higher Education). More information
  3. Building communities of practice among academics across the University who are new, or relatively new, to research supervision, and also among those senior academics and general staff who work closely with novice supervisors. More information
