Graduate Certificate

The Graduate Certificate in Educational Studies (Higher Education) is offered by the Institute for Teaching and Learning through the Faculty of Education and Social Work. It is designed for university teachers. The emphasis of the course is on improving student learning rather than on instructional methods. The course aims to provide university teachers with opportunities to reflect on educational theory and student learning research from the perspective of their own teaching experiences through the scholarship of teaching and learning. It is designed to support staff in developing their professional expertise as university teachers in order to better understand and enhance the learning of their students.

The curriculum and teaching of the graduate certificate is informed by a set of core principles.
The Graduate Certificate consists of four units of part-time study over two semesters. Click on the icons to access either the unit of study description or the more detailed unit of study outline.

A University of Sydney Graduate Certificate in Educational Studies (Higher Education) degree is awarded after successful completion of these four units.

Because of the demand for places in the Graduate Certificate, the University has put in place selection criteria to determine who is eligible to enrol from among the University’s staff.

Course fees for the Graduate Certificate are waived by the university for all approved university staff, but there is an expectation that graduands will mentor future students when approached. Please note that there is no mid year intake.

  Graduate Diploma - Doctoral Studies

The Graduate Certificate course articulates with Graduate Diploma units and Masters level units in Higher Education offered through the Faculty of Education and Social Work. The Graduate Diploma and Masters programs are designed to further support the continuing professional development of experienced academic staff. The ITL also offers research higher degree supervision to the level of PhD.

The four units in the Graduate Certificate are core units in the Masters program and can be fully credited to either the Graduate Diploma (which consists of 6 units) or to the Master of Education (Higher Education) (8 units). In the light of Faculty policy we advise participants intending to continue to higher levels not to actually take out (graduate with) the Graduate Certificate. Visit the faculty website to download the Graduate Handbook 2007.

Course fees for the Graduate Certificate are waived by the University for all University staff. For all units of study in the Graduate Diploma and Masters program full fees will be charged by the Faculty of Education and Social Work.
