Synergy
(Issue 26: November 2007): This special issue of the ITL's regular publication has a focus on diversity. This issue fulfils the ITL's usual aim of highlighting teaching and learning in relation to the University of Sydney's 45,000 demographically and culturally diverse students. It highlights examples of excellence in reflective, innovative and inclusive teaching practice, with a strong research base. There is a particular focus on Indigenous teaching, learning and research supervision.

Staff and Student Equal Opportunity Unit
This unit works with the University community to promote equal opportunity in education and employment, to create opportunities for traditionally disadvantaged staff and students, and to create an environment that is free from discrimination and harassment.

Sydney projects on diversity issues

Staff of the University of Sydney are engaged in research and development projects in teaching and learning at individual, faculty, institutional and national level. Many of these projects have a focus on diversity issues and we list just a few of them below. Others are described in Synergy (see above).

Embedding the Development of Intercultural Competence in Business Education
Project Leader: Associate Professor Mark Freeman
Partner Institutions: University of New South Wales; University of South Australia; Queensland University of Technology
Funding: $184,000 in 2006 from the Carrick Institute for Learning & Teaching in Higher Education

This project aims to develop the competence of Business graduates in valuing cultural differences, comunicating easily across diverse cultures and acquiring the range of skills and knowledge needed to conduct business globally. For an account of the project’s conceptual framework, see Treleaven, L. et al. (2007) Beyond Workshops: A Cultural Framework for Embedding Development of Intercultural Competence in Business Education. HERDSA News (December), 9-12. Click here to download (pdf format).

Inclusive Equity: A fair go for all students
This qualitative study of student equity in the Faculty of Arts focused on the experiences both of students and staff, and identified positive approaches for dealing with inequity and with overcoming disadvantage. The research was supported by a Teaching Improvement Grant, and led to a collection of vignettes of the experiences of students themselves, which are presented on an interactive website.
Research team: Dr Yasuko Claremont, Dr Fredericka van der Lubbe, Dr William Renner.
